Is a PDF or a Word file better for job applications?

A text-based PDF is the safer default: it looks identical everywhere, and modern applicant tracking systems read it without trouble. Send .docx only when the employer asks for it. What matters either way is that the text can be selected and copied — a scanned or photographed page contains no text at all.

Why does my converted PDF look different from my Word file?

This converter deliberately re-renders your content in a single-column, ATS-safe layout rather than reproducing Word's styling. Multi-column layouts, text boxes and tables are exactly what cause parsing failures, so they are not carried over. If you need a pixel-perfect copy of your Word design, use Word's own File then Save as PDF instead.

Does converting to PDF improve my ATS score?

Read this before you convert

This is not a pixel-perfect Word converter, and that is deliberate. It takes your text and rebuilds it in the layout applicant tracking systems parse most reliably. Columns, text boxes, tables, images and colour schemes are not carried over — those are the things that usually break parsing in the first place.

PDF or Word — which should you send?

Send a text-based PDF unless the employer specifically asks for Word. A PDF renders identically on every machine, and current applicant tracking systems read one without difficulty. The failure case is not the format, it is the file: a scanned or photographed page has no text layer at all, so nothing can be extracted from it however good the resume underneath is. After converting, open the PDF and try to select your own phone number — if you cannot, no parser can either.
