Not every silence is your resume's fault. How to spot postings that were never going to hire, and where to spend your applications instead.

Quick answer

Short answer

Some postings are never filled โ€” they collect pipeline, satisfy a policy, or were filled internally before going live. Silence from those is not feedback. Fix what you control, then spend applications where a real decision is being made.

Why postings stay open with nobody behind them

A role can be live for entirely ordinary reasons that have nothing to do with hiring you. Some companies keep evergreen listings to build a pipeline for roles they expect to open later. Some post externally because policy requires it, while an internal candidate is already lined up. Some listings simply outlive the budget that created them, and nobody remembers to take them down.

None of that is visible from the outside, which is what makes it demoralising. If you assume every silence is a verdict on your resume, you will rewrite a resume that was never read.

Signals worth checking before you apply

Repost age. A listing that has been reposted every few weeks for months is either very hard to fill or not being filled. Both are worth knowing.

Specificity. Real openings tend to describe a team, a product, and problems. Generic listings that could describe any company at any time often exist to collect resumes.

A named person. A posting connected to a recruiter or hiring manager you can identify is materially more likely to be live than one from an anonymous careers inbox.

Salary and location clarity. Vagueness on both, combined with an urgent tone, is a common pattern in listings that are collecting data rather than hiring.

The application route. Aggregators sometimes carry stale copies of listings that the company itself has already removed. Checking the employer's own careers page takes thirty seconds and often settles it.

Separate what you control from what you do not

You cannot tell a ghost posting from a real one with certainty, and you should not try to. What you can do is make sure that when an application does reach a real decision, it is not thrown away for a mechanical reason.

That means a file whose text extracts cleanly, contact details that are actually readable, dates on every role, and the role's real vocabulary present where it is true. Those are the failures that turn a genuine opportunity into the same silence a ghost posting produces โ€” and unlike the posting, they are entirely yours to fix.

Spend applications where the odds are better

A referral changes the path your resume takes through the process more than any wording change will. One conversation with someone inside the company is worth more than twenty aggregator applications.

Applying directly on the company's careers page removes a layer of staleness and usually puts you in the system the recruiters actually work from.

Track what you send. If you cannot remember which version of your resume went where, you cannot learn anything from the responses you do get.

When to stop and reassess

Fifty applications, no responses

At that volume the pattern is usually mechanical, not personal. Check that your file parses before sending more.

Responses that stop after the first screen

That points at content and fit rather than formatting โ€” a different problem with a different fix.

Only aggregator applications so far

Redirect a portion to direct applications and referrals before increasing volume.

Are most of your applications going through job aggregators?

Cross-check on the employer's careers page before spending an application.

Have you confirmed your resume's text can be extracted?

An unreadable file produces the same silence a ghost posting does.

Do you keep a record of which resume version went where?

Without it, you cannot tell which changes helped.

Quick answers

How common are ghost jobs in India?

There is no reliable public figure, and any specific percentage you see quoted should be treated with caution. What is clear is that evergreen pipeline listings, policy postings for pre-filled roles, and stale aggregator copies all exist โ€” so some share of silence is not about you.

Should I stop applying through Naukri or LinkedIn?

No. They are where most Indian openings are posted. Use them to find roles, then apply on the company's own careers page where one exists, and look for a referral before you send anything.

Is a fast rejection better than silence?

Practically, yes. A quick rejection means your application was seen and processed, which tells you the mechanical part worked. Prolonged silence tells you nothing at all, which is why ruling out parsing problems first is worth the effort.

How do I tell whether my resume is the problem?

Run it through an ATS check first. If extraction and keyword coverage are clean and you still get no replies across many applications, the issue is more likely targeting or the market than the document.
