Fresher Resume Checklist: ATS-Friendly Basics Before Campus Hiring

The strongest fresher resumes are not filled with buzzwords. They show learning, projects, internships, technical exposure, and clarity.

Recruiters know you are early in your career. Your job is to make your relevant proof easy to find.

A common mistake is trying to pad the resume with inflated responsibilities or generic soft-skill descriptions. 'Team player with excellent communication' adds nothing. 'Led a 4-person capstone team, presented findings to 3 faculty panels' adds real signal.

A project title alone is weak. Add what you built, what tools you used, what your contribution was, and what result or demo exists.

The three-part formula works well for any project: problem or goal, tools and approach, outcome or demo. 'Built a food delivery cost predictor using Python and linear regression — 87% accuracy on test set, code on GitHub' is a complete project entry that passes ATS keyword scanning and gives a recruiter something specific to ask about.

The single most common fresher resume mistake is a multi-column layout from Canva or a graphic template. These look polished on screen but ATS software reads the text in the wrong order — your skills sidebar ends up mixed into your education section, and your contact details may not be extracted at all. Campus placement cells at most top colleges now specifically warn against Canva resumes for this reason.

The second most common mistake is a vague objective statement at the top. 'Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can apply my skills' tells a recruiter nothing. Replace it with a two-line summary that states your target role, strongest technical area, and one proof point. 'Final year CSE student at VIT Chennai targeting backend engineering roles. Built and deployed 3 full-stack projects using Node.js, React, and PostgreSQL.' That is a concrete opening.

Third: listing skills as a wall of text with no connection to evidence. If you list Python, Machine Learning, SQL, and Tableau in your skills section, each of those should appear somewhere in your project or internship bullets. An ATS counts keyword frequency and placement — a skill listed only once in the skills section carries less weight than one that also appears in a project description.

For IT and software roles, prioritize in this order: education (with CGPA if above 7.5), technical skills, projects, internships, then certifications. Recruiters at service companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro scan for CGPA, programming languages, and DBMS keywords. Product companies and startups weight projects and GitHub activity more heavily than grades.

For non-IT roles in sales, operations, HR, finance, and marketing, the structure shifts. Lead with education and any relevant internship or part-time work. In the absence of formal experience, campus committee roles, event organisation, research work, and freelance projects count — but write them with scope and outcome the same way you would a job. 'Coordinated a 400-person annual fest with a ₹3L budget, managing 12 sub-committees' is a strong operations signal even from a student committee role.

For core engineering roles in mechanical, civil, electrical, and chemical streams, campus projects and lab work are the primary proof. Specify the software tools you used — ANSYS, AutoCAD, MATLAB, Solid Works, STAAD.Pro — because recruiters and ATS systems filter on these exact terms. Include your final year project with a clear one-line outcome. A fabricated or exaggerated project in core engineering is easy to catch in a technical interview — keep it accurate and specific.
