These six rules apply to every ATS system used by Indian employers in 2026 — Naukri, Taleo, Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, and SAP SuccessFactors.
Single-column layout
ATS parsers read left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Two-column resumes confuse the parser and mix up your contact details with your experience.
Standard section headings
Use headings ATS systems recognise: Work Experience (not "My Career"), Skills (not "What I Bring"), Education (not "Academic Background").
Reverse chronological order
Most recent role first. ATS systems and recruiters both scan the top of your experience section first — bury your best job and it gets missed.
Plain text bullets
Use bullet points, not custom symbols or icons. ATS systems often strip special Unicode characters, leaving garbled text.
Contact info at the top in plain text
Phone, email, location, LinkedIn URL — all as plain readable text. Not in a text box, not as an image header, not inside a table.
Job-specific keywords in context
Don't just list keywords. Embed them: "Led SQL-based reporting that reduced manual work by 8 hours/week" is better than just "SQL" in a skills list.
What kills your ATS score — avoid these
These are the most common ATS format failures CVScan sees in Indian resumes.
Tables or columns
Naukri, Taleo, and Workday all have documented issues parsing table-based resumes. The content gets scrambled or dropped entirely.
Headers and footers
Text inside headers and footers is invisible to most ATS parsers. Don't put your name, contact, or anything important there.
Images, logos, or photos
ATS systems cannot read image-based text. A photo on your resume wastes space and confuses parsers — Indian employers do not require photos for most roles.
Fancy fonts
Use a standard font: Calibri, Arial, Georgia, or Helvetica at 10–12pt. Unusual fonts render as boxes in some ATS systems.
Text boxes or shapes
Text inside Word text boxes and PowerPoint-style shapes is not extracted by most ATS parsers. It simply disappears.
PDF created from Canva or Figma
These tools export text as paths (image-like), not selectable text. The ATS reads a blank page. Always export from Word or Google Docs.
Format quick answers
PDF or DOCX for ATS?
PDF — but only from Word or Google Docs. Never from Canva. DOCX works too, but PDF is safer for formatting consistency. Both work on Naukri if text-based.
How many pages?
One page for freshers and under 3 years experience. Two pages for 4–10 years. Never three pages unless you are a senior executive with 15+ years.
Which font size?
10–11pt for body text, 13–16pt for your name, 11–12pt for section headings. Never below 10pt — hard to read and some parsers skip it.
What margins?
0.5–1 inch on all sides. Anything smaller compresses the text and makes it harder for parsers to identify sections.
Should I include a photo?
No. Indian MNCs and startups increasingly follow global norms that discourage photos to avoid bias. Most ATS systems ignore images anyway.
What about ATS in Naukri vs LinkedIn vs direct portal?
Naukri, LinkedIn, and direct portals (Taleo, Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS) all have slightly different parsers. CVScan tests your resume against rules common to all of them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best ATS resume format for 2026?
A single-column, text-based PDF or DOCX with standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills), reverse chronological order, and job-specific keywords embedded in bullet points. No tables, no columns, no Canva exports.
Does Naukri have its own ATS parser?
Yes. Naukri's built-in resume parser scores your resume and affects where it appears in recruiter searches. A resume with tables, missing keywords, or poor formatting will score low and appear further down in results. CVScan's ATS rules are calibrated for Naukri's scoring system.
Is a PDF or DOCX better for ATS in India?
Both work if they are text-based. PDF from Microsoft Word or Google Docs is safest because it preserves your formatting exactly. DOCX is equally parseable. The problem is Canva-exported PDFs — these are image-based and ATS systems read them as blank pages.
Will an ATS reject my resume if I use a two-column format?
Usually yes. ATS parsers read left-to-right, top-to-bottom. In a two-column layout, the parser merges text from both columns into a single line, creating garbled output. Your contact details may end up mixed with your job title, and keywords may be misplaced.
How do I check if my resume passes ATS?
Upload it to CVScan. You'll get an ATS score from 0–100, a list of formatting issues (tables, columns, images), and the specific keywords missing from your resume for your target role. The check is free.
Do I need to use a resume template?
Not necessarily. A clean Word document with standard formatting beats a heavily designed template that uses tables or columns. If you use a template, verify it's single-column and text-based. CVScan's optimized output is a clean single-column format that consistently passes ATS.
